Terrible electrical connects trouble residents at Robyn and Toermalyn Avenue in Eldorado Park

According to the resident, the cable snapped on the night of August 4, and two cables snapped on July 31 and were fixed over the weekend.

Angry residents who live on Robyn and Toermalyn Avenue in Eldorado Park waited for City Power to fix their electricity issues. David Pillay, a resident in Robyn Street explained: “We have been having problems since May 31 with this street pole that was connected. I have logged about 25 calls to City Power.

The overhead cable snapped, we’ve been having a lot of power surges and interruptions in our TS electrical Box, a lot of things have burnt.”

“All of these issues affect all of us in this area. Since we’ve been having these power surges, a lot of people’s TV’s fridges, computers, their appliances are all damaged.

“Ten years ago, we had this same problem, we had a petition and made a list of all of our appliances that were damaged, we took it to City Power and since then, we never got reimbursed for our damaged appliances.

“We have to fix our things with our own money, and now many people are not working, they don’t have money to keep on repairing. Some residents went to go fix their appliances in the week, and now with the power surges, their appliances are damaged again,” said Pillay.

On August 4, the TS electrical Box also started burning in the mini substation and it also occurred on July 31.

Pillay added: “what’s happening at the moment is that City Power is sending out different contractors and at the end of the day, they will blame one another and no one will take accountability for anything. This whole pole needs to be replaced, every time a cable burns, they just connect it, every wire that is going up now has a weak spot and this will be a continuous issue.

“These cables are not connected properly when it’s windy, the cables touch and they create sparks, sometimes the cables just fall.” At the time of the interview, at around 1 pm on August 5, there were still residents without electricity at their homes.”

Ward Cllr Peter Rafferty said: “I am aware and have been in communication with the bulk of the residents. This is largely attributed to the aging infrastructure of City Power.

“Cables snapped on three different occasions in Toermalyn Avenue, however, the lack of material stock over the last two months has been a major factor.

“The re-cabling will be done in due course and the powerhouse in Robyn Street to be refurbished.

“There are public liability claim forms that are available through City Power, where residents can claim for their losses, however, it does require receipts of the items.”

Unhappy residents also made accusations about City Power’s contractors, and at the time of publishing, we were awaiting a response from City Power’s Public Relations Manager; Isaac Mangena.

The story will be updated once the response is received.
