Ghetto Mpilo reclaims women dignity

The organisation has been working with families in Soweto to help overcome challenges brought by the Pandemic.

The month of August is marked women’s month, a month where women are celebrated and a lot of organisations use this month to restore women’s dignity, however, preserving or reclaiming the dignity of girls and women requires continuous efforts, as we celebrated and honored women on Sunday, August 9.  A Diepkloof based organisation, Ghetto Mpilo dedicated this day to restoring women’s dignity in Motsoaledi, donating Sanitary pads and clothes to them.

Due to the Pandemic, communities such as this one were hit hard and the organisation could not think of anything better than giving women dignity packs to sustain them for at least a month. Ghetto Mpilo is aimed at empowering youth and says that their efforts to empower women and girls in this community will not only be for the month of August but will be a continuous thing.

“Our organisation was established by a group of young people who saw the need to empower fellow youth. We are living in a generation where life is full of challenges especially for young people, so our aim is to give them hope that their dreams are valid, it doesn’t matter where they come from,” said Simphiwe Qaba a member of Ghetto Mpilo.

“With today’s event, we wanted to give women hope and show them that we care. Gender-Based Violence has been a nightmare in our country and we are simply saying to them, we are here to protect you,” Qhaba added.

Melbro Wholesale, The Eatery Cater, and Wordspread Media came through to assist.

” The Pandemic has given us more ideas on how we can help improve the lives of young people in our communities, we are all affected and somehow we were forced to unite as a country. We have long-term goals such as getting bursaries for underprivileged youth,” Lesego Mosupi, another member.

The organisation has been reaching out to many families to try and assist especially during this pandemic were people are losing jobs and are unable to afford the basics

“We so all these from our own pockets with some of us being unemployed, we are able to give the little we have. We have a database, where we identify challenges and visit families. We are not just donating and leaving, because empowering the community should be a consistent thing,” said Neo Makhanya, another member.

” The Pandemic has made us realize the importance of community, our backgrounds differ, some of us are orphans, we had to go through challenges alone but never given up, so we want to show our youth that nothing is impossible,” said Daluxolo Mabasa, another member.
