Soccer fans asked to play their part in defeating Covid-19

Watch and enjoy football from home.

Soccer fans from Soweto must be thrilled to watch the return of the Nedbank Cup this coming weekend when Bidvest Wits will go head to head with Mamelodi Sundowns in the tournament semi-finals.

It doesn’t take rocket science to know that the love for soccer runs deep in Soweto, but in light of of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the tournament sponsors, Nedbank, along with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and the participating teams are setting a unique statement reminding fans that they should watch matches responsibly at home.

No matter the excitement, health is a priority. To symbolize the reminder to watch soccer matches from home, all the participating players will wear rainbow-colored armbands calling all the viewers to #PlayYourPart.

Khensani Nobanda, the Group Executive for Marketing and Communications at Nedbank explained that “An armband in football is typically devoid of color and signifies mourning. We took that meaning and gave it a new light of hope.”

Nobanda further elaborated how nothing is a greater symbol of hope than the multi-colors of the South African national flag, she said that by putting this sign of hope on the arms of the players, they hope that it will be an inspiration to South Africans to play their part in curbing the spread of the global pandemic and that the only way the country will go through the pandemic is together.

“The return of soccer will likely have an unprecedented audience tuning in while celebrating the optimism of sport as a unifier of the nation and the return of live football, our goal is to teach the significance of the whole country disciplining itself to ensure that everybody protects everybody including siblings and loved ones,” Nobanda said.

Hashtag #PlayYourPart is a reminder to all South Africans that although the return of football is much reason to celebrate, people still need to stay safe and responsible enough to protect everyone around them, especially society’s vulnerable.

Mato Madlala the actin CEO for the PSL acknowledged that the whole country is currently going through many challenges, he said, “We know that this weekend millions will be glued to their tv screens to watch the return of football, starting with the Nedbank Cup. For now, we will play empty stadiums until the storm passes and we urge supporters to play their part in defeating Covid-19. Stay home and observe all protocol.”

Baroka FC will play against Bloemfontein Celtic FC also in the semi-finals and all the matches will be broadcast live on SuperSport and SABC on 8 August.
