Singer, songwriter, rapper, producer; Karoo King all the way from Ladismith in the Western Cape shares his story with us. Karoo King who was born Michael Roodtman released his latest album called ‘Deary4’, which is a trap soul-inspired album.
The artist identifies as an African of the legendary Southern African Khoikhoi people, and in his music, he uses mostly Afrikaans, English, and other indigenous South African words. The title of his album ‘Deary4’ means ‘deur die vuur’ in Afrikaans and in direct English translation ‘through the fire’.
This comes after the artist’s whole studio and everything he owned burned down in 2018. He rose like a phoenix from the ashes as explained in one of his songs and began to record again two years later.

The devasting fire inspired the whole album that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Kharshay Oliphant who is Karoo King’s public relations officer said: “This album has a pick-me-up feel to it and will inspire numerous people, especially during this trying times of this pandemic.”
Growing up in the church, Karoo King learned how to play the drums and basic beginner chords on the guitar.
The artist got introduced to songwriting and live musical shows by his brother-in-law Eloff Jacobs also known as ejaycooljay.
After living in the United Nations for a while, Karoo King released his first mixtape in 2005, and in 2007 he moved back to South Africa. Karoo King performed in Dubai in a band and then bought all of his equipment to start his own studio called Ram Klan Productions in his father’s garage.
The artist won the Showville (Ladysmith) talent competition in 2015 performing an original composition called Pittekop. After the devasting fire, and no insurance, Karoo King was set back until this year where he is now releasing his album ‘Deary4’.
