MEC Mokgethi visits family after fire destroys home

Heater started fire during the night.

The MEC for the Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) Nomathemba Mokgethi paid the Kgasi home a visit in Meadowlands Zone 1 to lend them a hand after their house burned in ablaze.

The stubborn blaze that is said to have lasted for over three hours also claimed a life of a 72-year-old woman who was in the house. The 72-year-old survived the fire but later died of smoke inhalation at Leratong Hospital where she was hospitalized.

Her daughter, Mpho Kutu explained that the fire was started by a four bars heater which was apparently left on at night. “It came in contact with a blanket and began this whole ordeal. The effort to put out the fire using buckets of water failed but everyone in the house managed to escape through the back door in the kitchen without any injuries,” said Kutu.

Most of the house and everything inside was destroyed by the time the Firefighters arrived around 3 am to extinguish the fire.

Kutu who has since taken her family to live with her in Braamfischerville said that the neighbours who helped accommodate her family have been very helpful. She added, “The children are not coping at all, while I am depressed. Losing a house to a blaze is a terrible event, but losing a mother also from the very same event, it’s very devastating.”

The MEC for GDSD Mokgethi paid the family a visit after the terrible event with essentials like blankets and food parcels. She also offered them assistance in helping the family continue living their lives after the night of the fire.

Counseling was also offered to the family and the children. Kutu said, “We are so relieved that the department came to our aid. I am hopeful that the MEC in her influence will help us get sponsors and help towards rebuilding our home because the kids need a home.”
