Palesa Chidi’s experience at Soweto Urban

Chidi joined Soweto Urban News in February 2020 to serve a six-month internship.

I joined Soweto Urban News in February 2020 and served my six-month internship under the mentorship of Mzwandile Khathi and Mark Scheepers. Joining the Caxton group has been the greatest way to launch my career and make a name for myself in the media industry.

I was given a great opportunity to showcase my skills and capabilities. The first few days were a bit tricky, but I got a hold of everything because I knew what I’m capable of. Working with the urban journalists was a good experience because they gave me a platform to be myself and they worked very well with me.

Having spent my whole life in Soweto, I thought I would never struggle with getting good stories and sources. Little did I know. I found out in February that I did not know my community as well as I thought. Caxton local media gave me the opportunity to get to know my community and interact with the people.

Although I had the best time at Urban, things got a bit sour in March following the outbreak of Coronavirus and the implementation of the national lockdown. To stay safe, we had to work from home for a couple of weeks and I had a tough time with that. It was at that time when I knew that I had to step out of my comfort zone and start thinking out the box.

The anxiety that came with working during a pandemic when we returned to the office was unbearable. It was a tough time but I managed to work through it with the help of my mentor and co-workers. They have shown me the true spirit of teamwork and I will forever be grateful for that.

The most exciting part is knowing that I have laid a great foundation for myself and my career through Caxton. I look forward to writing more stories that will educate, motivate, and entertain people.
