COVID-19 compliant features were fitted to more than 200 taxis at the Bara Taxi Rank

More safety measures for taxis.

COVID-19 compliant features were fitted to more than 200 taxis at the Bara Taxi Rank this past weekend, this was done as part of the Adopt-a-Safe-Passage to Work/School campaign initiated SDI Force and its partners.

The aim of the campaign is to put in place stringent and practical measures to decrease the risk of COVID-19 infections in taxis by up to 80%.

These features include ventilation spaces on windows that ensure adequate airflow inside the taxi, sanitiser stations inside the taxi, and a seal that divides the taxi between the driver and passenger side.

In addition to the installation of these features, there is also educational material inside taxis in the form of stickers detailing how money should change hands while putting an emphasis on the importance of social distancing.

All these safety features are in line with the plea made by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his last address to the nation where he urged people to adhere to the regulations.

With the taxi industry transporting millions of people to work and schools every day in this country, it has the potential to become a breeding ground for new COVID-19 infections if safety measures are not put in place.

“The taxi industry is the connecting force for a huge part of our population, and we are compelled to ensure that these commuters are protected and secure as possible,” says Brad Fisher, SDI Force Co-Founder.

“SDI Force collaborated with leading authorities in public health, communicable disease specialists, risk compliance experts, occupational health practitioners, and even production engineers who assisted us with the taxi modification equipment.

“The City of Johannesburg also played a crucial, supportive role on the ground, and we are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support.”

The Adopt-a-Safe-Passage to Work/School is expected to put taxi commuters at ease as many were worried about their health when the announcement that local taxis can now load 100% capacity.

The introduction of this initiative does not mean that other health and safety measures will take a back seat. Taxi operators will continue enforcing the ‘no masks no ride’ policy. More taxis are expected to be fitted with these features in the coming weeks and the target is 5000 taxis.
