Joburg City Parks and Zoo celebrated tata Madiba’s 102 birthday in Soweto

The MMC lit candles and lay a wreath in the garden.

Johannesburg City Parks and zoo held a Wreath laying ceremony at the Thokoza Park Nelson Mandela Memorial Garden in celebration of the first black president’s 102 birthday.

MMC of community development Magratte Arnolds said they held the celebration to honour the life of a woman of great importance in the South African history Zindziswa Mandela-Hongwane who was being buried on the day and to celebrate her father’s birthday.

She explained that due to the COVID pandemic they could not attend the funeral to pay their last respect that’s why they decided to lay a wreath and light candles in a place where her father planted a tree 12 years ago.

A spokesperson for Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo Jenny Moodley explained more about the garden. She said in 2008 as part of Madiba’s 90th birthday they invited him to come to the park and on September 3 during Arbor Month celebration the former president came and unveiled a mural and planted a tree that is now over 4m high.

“The tree is enclosed inside a fence that represents the 27 years that he spent in prison and to protect the tree,” concluded Moodley.

The MMC lit candles and lay a wreath in the garden.
