A group of Soweto youth tells stories through film and production.

Telling stories through film has shown to be one of the greatest ways to do it. A group of young Sowetans have come together to put their skills to good work. They founded a film and video production company, Sotra flicks in early 2020.

Their passion and love for film and production was fueled by Pathways to production, an international organization that aimed to inspire and teach young people to get into film and production. Pathways to production has taught them skills and everything they need to know about the film and production industry.

Bontle Moloi of Sotra flicks explained that they created this company because of their love for film and storytelling. They want to tell authentic stories that will educate and entertain.

They are currently working on two projects namely; The Coronavirus lockdown pandemic and Ghetto revolution dance lessons.

Sotra flicks mentioned that as a newly founded company, they have faced a number of difficulties. “We do not have equipment of our own. In order to produce great quality for our work, it is crucial that we hire the best equipment.”

They continued to explain that they find it hard to achieve financial assistance and responsible as the team is made up of unemployed youth.

Their love for storytelling has kept them going strong and motivated despite the challenges they face. Their drive to create change within the community and starting new conversations has been their biggest motivator.

They are an independent company and are currently looking for funding and/or sponsorship. Sotra flicks plans to find their stand through the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions. They want to create content that will distinguish them among the rest.

Going forward, they aim to work with established national broadcasters in sharing our own content. Their plan is to become one of the most biggest production companies in the continent.

“Keeping it real” is the motto and slogan of Sotra flicks, it always motivates them to be real to themselves and produce real content.
