Makokou 35th birthday celebration

WATCH: Birthday wishes for Mokokou.

On Thursday, July 9 Mokokou the Western Lowland Gorilla turned a year older. Johannesburg Zoo held a mini celebration for the 35-year-old  which also included celebrating his speedy recovery following a chronic nasal and swelling surgery which he underwent last month.

Amongst the attendees was the MMC of community development Magratte Arnolds who shares a star sign with the birthday boy.

She wished him well and thanked everyone who contributes to the well being of Makokou.

Spokesperson for Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo read a birthday wish from Dr. Jenny Grey who used to be the head of the zoo when the Gorilla arrived at the JHB zoo.

Enrichment officer at the zoo Candice Ward said their happy that Makokou is doing well after the surgery and they prepared a jelly cake for him.

The Gorrilla indeed enjoyed the treats as he licked his hands after enjoying the jelly cake which was evidence enough that he was enjoying his treat.

Mokokou was born on July 9 at Stuggart zoo in Germany and came to South Africa in 2004 when he was 19 years old.

The birthday celebration continued on social media.
