Tshego’s murder case disrupted by Covid-19 cases at court

The proceeding were postponed after the news came through that two policemen at the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court had tested positive for Covid-19.

The much-anticipated court appearance of the man accused of murdering Tshegofatso Pule did not take place on Thursday, 2 July.

The proceeding was postponed after the news came through that two policemen at the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court had tested positive for Covid-19. Instead of the normal proceedings, the day was spent disinfecting the courtrooms.

The matter was postponed to next week when the accused is expected to be defended by a private attorney after ditching Legal Aid during his previous appearance.

He is currently facing charges of premeditated murder following Tshego’s death.

The slain 28-year-old from Soweto was found hanging from a tree in Durban Deep, Roodepoort last month.

She had suffered stab wounds to her upper body.

Muzikayise Malephane(31) accused of murdering Tshegofatso Pule appeared at the Roodepoort Magistrate court yesterday for the second time. Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), African National Congress (ANC), Activists, and the general public arrived early and picketed outside the Roodepoort Magistrate court demanding justice for Pule.

The proceedings were cut short when Malephane requested to be represented by a private lawyer and not by Legal AID.

Regional Magistrate John Baloyi after hearing Malephane’s request for a private representative postponed the case to July 2. This decision was met with anger by EFF and ANC members who became ungovernable in court.

Outside court  EFF and ANC spoke in one voice which is demanding justice for the brutal murder of Pule.

Lerato Ndarala who was Pule’s friend was dissatisfied with the proceedings, as she felt they may never find closure if the case continues being postponed.

She further questioned IF Maphalane is going to pay for his sins.

Regional Chairperson of Gauteng Women’s League Ndivhuwo Sekolo was also angered by the postponement and stated that women’s lives are not taken seriously in South Africa.

She called on the government to protect women and ensure that justice prevails.

Deputy Secretary of the EFF Popi Mailola was very emotional while addressing the people who were having a peaceful demonstration outside the court.

She explained that as a party they condemn the killing of women and children.

Mailola assured the family that they will help them fight this trial. Furthermore, she stated that women in South Africa cannot continue living in fear.

Mailola asserts that women in South African are not free because they might die in the hands of males.

She alluded that they need the government and the justice system to do something about the killings of women and children.

Pule was found hanging on a tree in Durban Deep, Roodepoort on Monday, June 8. She was 8 months pregnant when her life and the life of her unborn baby were cut short.

The question of when will Fermicide end? still lingers in the minds of the mourning community, as they wish and pray for justice to prevail for Pule.
