Nomkhosi Msomi raped 8 times by different men since the age of 15

“When someone talks about the experience of breaking their virginity, I am clueless and I keep quite because my virginity was forcefully taken away from me at an early age at school on top of a desk," - Nomkhosi Msomi.

Open Disclosure foundation,  a Non-Profitable Organisation (NPO) that deals with issues of gender-based violence on both men and women held a prayer session following the recent brutal murders of women that spiked during the month of June.

An auxiliary worker at the organisation Zanele Mamome opened up the session by asking forgiveness from God for their sin, because they don’t understand as to why do women get killed on a daily basis.

Yvone Mabeo lit candles in honour of all the women who were brutally murdered and read a prayer pleading for the protection of women who face different kinds of abuse and begged for transformation in South Africa in relation to the high stats of GBV.

Gender-Based Violence survivor Nomkhosi Msomi who was raped 8 times by different men since the age of 15-years-old was one of the attendees at the prayer session to share her experience of which the scars led her to attempt suicide 7 times since 2020 commenced.

Msomi explained that she experienced physical abuse from the father of her first child whom she alleged that he stabbed her and pointed a gun at her.

“I have a scar in my head which I got when the father of my first born hit me with a padlock and he stabbed me  near the spinal cord,” she explained.

Msomi scared for her life went on to report the case at the nearest police station and was advised by the police officer to move out before she is killed.

Msomi explains that she does not understand when people talk about losing their virginity because that experience was forcefully taken from her while she was still in school.

“When someone talks about the experience of breaking their virginity, I am clueless and I keep quite because my virginity was forcefully taken away from me at an early age at school on top of a desk.

“She explained that when someone ask you out,  you would never predict if they are abusers or not,” she said.

Msomi said most fathers abuse their children and mothers because of the entitlement of being the providers and urges women to stop protecting men at the cost of their children.

Msomi assert that her experience triggered anger towards men to the extent that she became violent and decided not to date anymore.

Msomi decided to focus on her physically challenged children and forgot about dating for she fears she might be arrested for assault due to her anger.

With that being said Msomi explain that at the age of 43, a 21 years old attempted to rape her and when she reported the incident, she was told the was not enough evidence.

Msomi advises women to be not reliant on men for security or stability but to accept their current financial situation as it is.

“Go and eat cabbage at your home because it is not wise to enjoy a luxurious life while being abused,” she said.

Her experience made her strong to the extent that she decided to become a motivational speaker to empower people who deal with abuse.
