44 years later 1976 soweto uprising student set to complete her matric

Johanna Ratshefola is a learner at Peter Lengene adult School.

Johanna Ratshefola is one of the celebrated proud class of 1976 who fought for the liberation of the students who were subjected to use Afrikaans as a medium of education.

At the time she was a matriculant of Moletsane Secondary School and she was only 19 years old. Ratshefola said during the first break they were ordered to leave the classrooms and participate in march that was taking place.

“Our leader was Tsietsi Mashinini. I remember as we were marching things got bad the police were shooting at us and the was teargas all over. I could see bodies of students laying on the ground,” recalled Ratshefola.

She explained that the experience brings back good and bad memories. She said ever since she has never went back to school.

” I went straight to my mother in Fotchville to help her with her siblings. I later got a job at a supermarket and then got married at the age of 38,” she said.

Because Ratshefola wanted to be a better somebody in the community, 44 years later she is a learner at Peter Lengene adult School and will be among the matriculants who will be writing in November this year.
