The wait is over for demolished Nancefield Hostel building affected dwellers

MMC for Housing Mlungisi Mabaso visited the hostel to finally introduce the contractor.

After four years of waiting, dwellers of the previously demolished Nancefield Hostel building finally get assurance regarding a way forward. May 16 saw Joburg Mayoral Member of Committee (MMC) for housing Mlungisi Mabaso visiting the hostel to assure the hostel’s headman, Tisha Shange and other community leaders that the rebuilding of the  demolished block will be completed after 4 years delay.

Mabaso introduced the contractor who he says will start with the rebuilding as soon as possible to ensure that those who were forced to look for alternative places to stay will finally get a peace of mind.

“After hearing their cry we requested for assistance from the Johannesburg Housing Authority JOSHCO, to assist us with the matter and today I am glad to say we are taking action and finally introducing a contract to this community,” Mabaso said.

The building was destroyed by a tree, which fell on top of it four years ago and the building was then demolished with the aim of rebuilding it but four years later, it’s still incomplete.

About 25 dwellers were affected and according to Mtungwa Khulekani, who is the chairperson of the Hostel, it hasn’t been an easy journey not only for those who were directly affected, but also for them as community leaders as those who were affected constantly demanded answers from them as to when the building will be completed.

“It hasn’t been easy and I understand their frustrations, four years ago we requested that those who were affected opt for alternative places to stay as we did not think it would take this long, but it took four years and they needed answers,” Mtungwa said.

” Finally, it is happening, people are going to get back their homes and we are grateful for that,” Mtungwa added.

The hostel’s headman, Shange expressed his deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed towards the rebuilding of this part of the hostel. The community leaders used the same platform to also request for proper toilet facilities especially for dwellers who stay in shacks at the Hostel.
