JMPD and SAPS successfully intercept cash heist suspects in Tladi, Soweto

The interception led to a shootout between suspects and officers.

According to a statement issued by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department Communications Unit, on Wednesday, May 20, the JMPD and SAPS officers received information that armed suspects in a white double cab were going to attack and rob a van which transports cash.

The officers intercepted heavily armed suspects near Pick n Pay at Merafe Station in Tladi, before midday, this led to a shootout between the suspects and officers.

Officers chased the suspects and when they reached the railway line in Naledi, the suspects abandoned their vehicle and continued shooting at the officers.

“One male suspect died on the scene, another male suspect was taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital with injuries to his legs and two male suspects managed to escape.

Two semi automatic rifles and ammunition were found on the scene. None of the officers got injured during this incident,” JMPD Spokesperson Wayne Minaar said.

” A case docket for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, attempted murder and attempted robbery will be investigated,” he added.
