No visits allowed at the correctional service

Jabulani SAPS has suspended visits to offenders after President Cyril Ramaphosa declared the outbreak of Covid-19 a national state of disaster in terms of the Disaster Management Act.

The Jabulani police spokesperson, Captain Sfiso Mazibuko said measures were taken to protect those held in correctional services, as they provided them with gears to fight the spread of the virus.

He said the suspension of visits is intended to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

“The is a suspension of public visits to correctional centres, holding cell and detention facilities. If you get arrested you will not get any visits, including in military detentions and Department of Social-Development for 30 days if not extended,” said Mazibuko.

Mazibuko said these measures are intended to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, he said the police also use masks and gloves for exchange of documents. People should remember that spreading the virus is also a criminal offence, he added.

“The spreading of the virus is a crime, if you know that you are positive or you know that you have been in contact with someone who is from the high-risk places, isolate yourself and follow the necessary steps to get help,” said Mabizela.
