Pubs and Taverns in Soweto comply to new regulations to halt COVID-19

The first weekend of No alcohol after 1 pm rule.

This past weekend was the first weekend since Police Minister, Bheki Cele announced that alcohol will be sold between 9 am and 6 pm on weekdays and until 1 pm on weekends as one of the measures taken by the government to halt COVID-19. But somehow alcohol is attached to entertainment is Mzansi.

While others opted to just buy alcohol and go drink indoors, some were left stranded, driving around looking for alternative places to chill.

It seemed most taverns and pubs in Soweto are complying with Cele’s instructions.

One of the busiest streets in Diepkloof is Immink Drive, just not this past weekend. One popular spot in this street, Chilli Pepper, where food is sold took some precautions to make sure that it doesn’t get crowded.

Although they don’t sell alcohol, people just go there to chill, unfortunately, this past weekend the place was only open to those who were going there to buy food.

Moja Café in Orlando East had also opened the restaurant side only, Meat Meet in Diepkloof Zone 3 also just sold their famous braai meat.


Chilli Pepper closed for those who are there to just chill and have drinks.

Some local taverns and pubs were also spotted complying with these regulations.

Anyone who has been to Vilakazi Street on a normal day can attest to the fact that it is hard to drive there as the street is always crowded and busy, the past weekend was different though, it was quiet with fewer cars than usual.

To make sure that everyone was complying SAPS and JMPD were also at work, ensuring compliance at these places.



TK Liquors in Diepkloof Zone 3 was also spotted closed after 1pm.
