The 2020 South African economic structure was recently announced during the budget speech yet residents are complaining about poor service delivery and a lack of jobs.

Tladi Camp is an informal settlement and one of the isolated, underdeveloped and unsafe areas in Soweto, still residents live there because they cannot afford to buy houses and according to some of them, they claim government is not assisting with infrastructure in their area as they need electricity, water and new houses to be built while they live in shacks.

“My health is not good at all and it is a hassle for us to fetch water as we have to walk long distances. I have been living here for more than 25 years, and yet, there are still no good changes, instead – we suffer even more.

“I usually cry myself to sleep because a normal person would not stand such an unhealthy lifestyle. Human waste is everywhere because the toilets are broken. My grandchildren are unemployed, so it is extremely hard to earn a living,” said 71-year-old pensioner, Grace Leolo.

Grass cutting is done by residents as their request is left unattended. Floods caused by heavy rains left some of the residents homeless and not living in good conditions.
