MEC Panyaza Lesufi announces yet another learner death from Eldorado

The Gauteng Department of Education has lost 22 school children since the academic year has started.

Since the reopening of the academic year, the Gauteng Department of Education has lost 22 school learners this far.

The Gauteng Education MEC, Mr. Panyaza Lesufi, wishes to inform about the death of a Grade 11 boy -learner from Eldorado Park Secondary School.

It is alleged that the boy drank poison on Tuesday, 03 March 2020, and was rushed to a local hospital for necessary medical attention, unfortunately, he died on Thursday, 05 March 2020, after the Medical team advised the family that the life support machine be switched off.

Sadly, we were informed by the family that this was a second attempt after he survived the first one last year, 2019.

Since the beginning of the academic year 2020, unfortunately, this is the 22nd learner death to be announced accordingly.

“We would like to send our sincere condolences to the family and the school community.

“Indeed, we are lost for words, to comfort them, we feel their pain during this time of grief” said MEC Lesufi.

Our Psycho-Social Team will on Monday, visit all the schools for necessary support and counselling.
