Heavy rain constantly causes flooding and leaves damages in Riverlea

Residents in Riverlea Extension claim that the issue started when the highway between Riverlea and the FNB Stadium was built just before the Soccer World Cup in 2010.

Every year, due to the heavy rain, residents in our community are affected by floods which cause damage to many of their properties.

Riverlea, in particular, had the issue of floods on Sand, Solati and Molopo Street.

Another area affected by the heavy rain is Links Road between Albertina Sisulu Road and Main Reef Road which causes a lot of traffic as drivers either have to make a U-turn or drive in the mud on the side of the roads.

Residents in Riverlea Extension claim that the issue started when the highway between Riverlea and the FNB Stadium was built just before the Soccer World Cup in 2010.

Every year, the water levels rise so drastically that residents need to be evacuated as water covers half or even more of their homes, cars get trapped, electrical boxes are also covered in water which causes huge concerns as residents are afraid that they will get electrocuted.

To add to the concerns, often sewage pipes overflow and mix with the rainwater and sweep into residents’ homes, and snakes are also found in the homes as they are trying to escape the floods too.

Residents have to deal with this issue every year, this year, while many were trapped in the floods, non-profit organisations worked with residents to supply meals to families affected by the floods, some also organised blankets for the residents.

Those who are running for the ward councillor position were also put to task in a way to prove why residents should vote for them in March.

After the past weekend’s heavy rain, the streets were cleared from the flood, and officials were also working on Links Road trying to fix the drainage on that road.
