Soweto Spectacular throws a spicy twist for the 2020 tournament
The 2019 Soweto Spectacular defending champions Aston Villa is back to defend their title.
Soweto Spectacular is back with an exciting spin for the 4th Soweto Spectacular tournament after a silent 2019, the tournament will take place on Saturday 15 February, at UJ campus, Soweto.
Whether you are a sports fanatic or just find amusement in watching sports be ready for some action in the field of play. Soweto Urban had a chat with the director of the tournament Thabiso Moremi to find out what fans can expect in the 4th edition of the tournament.
Moremi said they had issues with the venue last year hence the tournament was not played but to make up for it they will host the tournament twice this year.
He said Soweto Spectacular tournament is about the fans and this year they have a different spin for fans to enjoy all the games because this is what the fans want, they want to see the players dribble in the field.
“So what we are going to do this year is that while the game is playing, we are going to stop the game and cancel the rules for five minutes then the game continues which means players can do anything, no offside, no rules for five minutes,’’ Moremi explained.
“After five minutes the game goes back to normal rules but if the teams agree to continue with the concept of no rules they will be allowed to express their desire to do so,” he added.

The four teams in this tournament include Mamba FC, Sneke Chillers, 2018 finalists KFC and the defending champions Aston Villa.
The 2020 first-place team will walk home with a Soweto Spectacular Trophy, Gold Medals, and a R10 000 cheque. The second place is silver medals and a R3000 cheque and third and fourth will each get a R1 000.
All teams get a fully branded Soweto Spectacular kit that they will utilize for the duration of the tournament.
He said this is an effort to develop local football as the tournament does not require any affiliation fee for team participation.
