Lesufi urges investigation into the death of a 13-year-old Eldorado Park boy

The learner, was found dead in the school's hostel swimming pool around 4 pm on the 15th of January 2020.

The Gauteng Department of Education has urged investigators to move with speed in finalizing the investigation into the death of a 13-year-old Eldorado Park boy. It is understood the learner, was found dead in the school’s hostel swimming pool around 4 pm on the 15th of January 2020.

The department expressed disappointment that it only received this information in the afternoon of 17 January. However, it is believed police attended the scene and the Phycho Social Unit available based at the school was available and conducted counselling for learners and teachers at the school on Thursday Evening, 17 January 2020.

It was reported that on the 15th of January 2020, 13-year-old learner Keamohetswe Shaun Seboko drowned at Laerskool Bekker Primary swimming pool. Seboko was boarding at the school.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of our boy. We have so many questions that we need answers for. I think there was foul play and we have discussed this with the principal as well. He assured us that he will get back to us. We thank the MEC for coming and being with us. but yes it is not easy, we cannot send kids to school and something like this happens,” said Stayi.

Gauteng MEC Panyaza Lesufi addressed media on last week in Johannesburg.

“We have urged the investigators to speed up the process. We want answers! South Africans want answers!” said Lesufi during the media brief.

The MEC had also visited Seboko home in Eldorado Park shortly after hearing the news.

“We are emotionally distraught, to be frank. We want to assure the family them of our support and also assured them that whatever we do as a department will ensure that they have relevant information they can utilize.

“We want to thank the school for coming here to answer questions that the family rightfully has.

“The difficult task to come and explain to the family. The family has a lot and lots of question and they feel that there are things are unexplained.

“I assured them there where we have an independent probe that will be investigating.

“The thing that makes this tragedy this tragedy so painful is that besides the boy, there were two other family members at the school.

“The family has expressed a desire to move the kids and arrangements have been made to move them to a different school,” said Lesufi speaking to media in Eldorado Park.
