Interview with Diandre Gomez a top achiever from Westbury High

“it doesn’t matter where you come from, it’s all about the mind” - Diandre Gomez.

We got to interview Diandre Gomez (18), a matriculant from Westbury High, who is one of the top learners from the Class of 2019.

Gomez got a bachelor’s to pass with distinctions in the subjects: Life Science, Life Orientation and Afrikaans and managed to get level 6 for the rest of his subjects.

“I’m excited about my results however, I could have done better if I had a better plan in place. Its all about planning and commitment, sometimes we do not want to accept that circumstances hinder us and they are inevitable but we need to stay strong to withstand the iniquities of life.”

“I had some challenges at home but they were manageable, I also had some self-esteem challenges particularly in last year where I doubted myself and that resulted in me overstudying, I never gave myself a chance to relax for a moment.

“The moment I woke up, I just thought of books, I didn’t think of washing or eating breakfast, that’s how my brain worked throughout the final exams, it did work out somehow for me.”

When asked about the plans he has for this year, Gomez shared that he is going to study bachelor of science in biochemistry and genetics at the University of the Witwatersrand or Rhodes University in the Eastern Cape. Gomez was proud to also share that he received his acceptance letters from both universities.

“I’m thinking of relocating to the Eastern Cape. By moving away from home will make me more independent and I will be more focused”.

Gomez left a message for the Class of 2020 and that is: “It’s not about being the top learner but it’s about showing who you are and who you want to be.

“I believe that people need to motivate themselves and have that motivation in themselves because only you know who you are and who you want to become.

“I also want to tell them to stay determined and be brave because once you are brave, the world is your oyster, no one can turn you done, it doesn’t matter where you come from, it’s all about the mind.
