Robbery and theft on the rise at Diepkloof Square in Diepkloof

The spokesperson for Diepkloof SAPS, Captain Phephi Matlou-Mteto explained that if a robbery is not reported at the police station, there's very little that the police can do.

Jabulani Sibiya, who is the manager of Diepkloof Square, felt it necessary to warn the people from around Diepkloof and Soweto about the robbery and theft trends that have been taking place around the shopping centre.

According to Sibiya, nine incidents have been reported to his office by some customers who had been just conned.
He said, “There are young men who dress smart as if they’re working for some cell phone network company; but they only turn out to be con-artists who swindle unsuspecting people out of money, especially during month-end.”

Matlou-Mteto said, “People must understand that the manager from Diepkloof Square is not a police officer, he should advice all the robbery victims to promptly open cases after being robbed at the police station.”

Sibiya elaborated that according to some incidents captured on CCTV, some customers naively walk into a con-artist’s trap. He said people should be more responsible and stop allowing strangers to randomly offer them help around ATMs.

Another robbery that was reported on top of the nine robberies was of another woman who was tricked around Food Lover’s Market. The manager at the centre said, “The woman was made to believe that some other women work in the store when they took her bag with phones, monies and belongings. No cases have been opened yet.”
