“I did not see the next AB de Villiers but who knows, I did not see everyone play,” said Marais about the festival.

The in action at Dale Primary School is only a small sample of the 124 000 from 6 495 schools that take part in 43 732 mini-cricket matches around the country every year.

Buhle Motshegoa of Cricket South Africa said the day was a beautiful one with just over 1 200 children that came to the festival.

She said it she was pleased to see the number of girls that took part and that bodes well for the future of girls cricket in the country.

“What stood out for me is the commitment of the coaches. “I met a pensioner from Hill Town and in her retirement, she still goes to her local school to coach,” said Motshegoa.

The mini-cricket programme one of the big of its kind in the country. It is an example of a way to introduce the sport to young children in any sporting code.
