The Environmentorz has remained committed to educating residents about the importance of keeping the environment clean.

June this year saw a beautiful park and food garden being created for residents in Eldorado Park. Situated at the Waterpan Flats, the food garden was created to teach residents how to sustain themselves.

The Environmentorz believe that with unity, the Greater Eldorado Park community can be one of the cleanest within the City of Johannesburg.

Marketing manager Kaylene Jegels said that the organisation is very excited about the food garden.

“This garden is truly special to all of us. For us it’s exciting because we finally have our first real garden producing beautiful vegetables. We have had many projects in the past that just did not work out but this is different,” said Jegels.

“It’s also really wonderful to see the commitment from residents, they are the ones maintaining the garden,” she added.

64-year-old Hanief Maned Kara is one of the residents committed to maintaining the food garden.

“This garden has become like my baby. I wake up to look after it, I clean it and water it. It’s a special feeling to watch seedlings grow into vegetables,” said Kara. “Working in the garden is therapeutic as well,” he added.

Doran and Delano Adonis have started assisting Kara with the garden work.

“This is something new, we haven’t always been interested in gardening but Mr. Kara has taught us a lot. We urge youngsters in our community to get involved with positive activities. Because of gardening, we remain motivated and off the streets, away from all the bad,” they said.

Jegels confirmed that the garden’s second batch of vegetables will soon be ready for harvesting. “We would like to thank our sponsors, Shoprite as well as Food and Trees for Africa who continuously donate seedlings,” Jegels concluded.
