Spreading false rumours online can result in prosecution

The communications officer constable Roxanne Gibb confirmed that there have been instances where innocent lives have been lost as a result of fake news circulating online.

The Eldorado Park SAPS warns residents to look out for fake news circulating on social media. Communications officer, Constable Roxanne Gibb urges residents to stop sending and spreading false rumours online as it will result in prosecution.

“Residents need to understand that by spreading fake news they automatically defame the victim and that is unlawful,” said Gibb. “By spreading these rumours, not only are innocent lives put at risk but the hard work from the police is discredited,” Gibb added.
