Street lights for Union Road in Eldorado Park

The street lights along Union Road have been a concern for Eldorado Park residents and motorists for over a year now.

The street lights along Union Road have been a concern for Eldorado Park residents and motorists for over a year now. With pedestrian and motorist safety in mind, Ward councillor Fazel Jaffer remains committed to road safety.

“Union Road has been a concern for a while now. The stretch of the road is pitch black at night because there aren’t any lights, making it unsafe for residents,” said Jaffer.

The councillor also confirmed that vandalism was the reason the road had no lights.

“Vandalism is an ongoing issue in the community. The street lights were fixed in June last year but only two weeks later the lights were stolen and poles vandalised.

“More than a year later, City Power is on board. They will be removing the old damaged street poles and will be replacing them with High-mast lighting – in hopes that they will be too high to vandalise,” said Jaffer.

The councillor also spoke about the ongoing illegal dumping issue in the community, especially the Lapland area in Devland.

“Lapland is honestly a pain for residents and remains a major concern because the value of the area seems to be decreasing daily with all the newly built shacks and waste material piling up along Union Road. The Landfill site has been causing an unbearable stench, especially for residents in Extension Two.

“Despite the heat, many are forced to keep their windows closed because of the smell. Residents have also reported having chest problems because of inhaling smoke daily. Plastic is being burnt in Lapland every day, ” said Jaffer.

Jaffer again confirmed that despite countless site visits from officials – a long term plan has still not been set in place.

“One of the short term goals is to clean up the area as much as we can because the dirt blows over Union Road and into Extensions Two and Four,” said Jaffer.

“Another challenge is that many of the City’s infrastructure is being taken to the Lapland area to sell. Vandalised items, including drain covers, Pikitup bins, and palisade fences are allegedly being accepted at an informal recycling scrapyard on site. This has been reported to JMPD as well as SAPS,” the councillor concluded.
