Electrical cable connects in Coronationville become a worry in the rainy season

Resident Isaac Ismail from Coronationville explained that he is concerned about what he assumes is City Power subcontractors who connected what they called ‘temporary connections’ throughout the area.

As we approaching the rainy season, many residents in our community become weary of illegal cable connections, poor infrastructure such as leaking roofs, blocked sewage drains, stormwater drains and the list can continue.

Resident Isaac Ismail from Coronationville explained that he is concerned about what he assumes is City Power subcontractors who connected what they called ‘temporary connections’ throughout the area.

Some connections are from light poles straight through a window on of the premises, some of the electrical boxes are opened and cables and at the Cheswick Flats cables are also connected in a way that is exposed to anyone.

According to Ismail, the subcontracted connected the cables over four months ago and the residents did not think that what they called ‘temporary’ will be such a long period.

Some residents said that they feel that these temporary connects will become permanent because that is usually what happens in their area.

In conversation with Ward Councillor (Cllr) Genevieve Sherman, the Cllr said that she is aware of some temporary connections, however, encourages residents to report matters to City Power and if it is illegal connections then residents should report to City Power, get a reference number and then send it to the Cllr so that she can escalate the matter.

If you know or suspect anyone with an illegal electricity connection, or notice people tampering with connections, you can contact the City at Joburg Connect on 0860 562 874 or 0860-JOBURG and select the option for City Power (02). To send reference numbers to Cllr Sherman, you can contact her on 073 543 9123.
