With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, EldosFm in association with the Gauteng Department of Health hosted free health screening services at the Eldos Market.

Held at Eldomain Secondary School the event was aimed at increasing attention and support for cancer.

Sandile Gwayi, the communications manager for the Johannesburg Health District said that the idea was not to limit awareness of just cancer.

“There were other health services that were made available to the Greater Eldorado Park community.

“These included HIV/Aids testing, Tuberculosis screening, diabetes, and blood pressure screening as well as eye testing,” said Gwayi.

Cynthia Khumalo from Lilian Ngoyi Community Clinic was present at the free health screening event and educated residents on how to properly care for their dental health.

“You need to change your toothbrush every three months,” said Khumalo.

“It’s important that people know to steer away from using hard toothbrushes.

“I would recommend getting a medium-textured toothbrush and if your gums are swollen you need to use a soft textured brush,” she added.

Community activist, EldosFM presenter, and breast cancer survivor, Charis Pretorius – was also present at the event and shared her journey with cancer.

Pretorius shaved off her hair in support of the initiative.

“The first time I shaved off my hair it was down to my back and I cried like a baby because of the realisation that I had to deal with it. But now, I shave my hair to create awareness and to show support,” said Pretorius.

The Barber Empire was also present at the event and offered hair cuts to the community, accepting donations of any amount. Nice eyes optometrist was also present and offered free eye tests to the community.
