The players and coach were not the only ones involved however, the key to Lakeview's success lies in a combined effort from the entire school. This was according to the school's Sporting Coordinator, Mbuyiselo Makalima.

Lakeview Full Service Primary can look back proudly on a good year that saw their soccer team crowned Gauteng Games’ Provincial Champions

The boys in maroon went through the clusters, district and regional rounds unscathed before finally certifying their dominance at the provincials. However, they had to do it the hard way as they came from behind to win their final match 4-3 and bring the trophy back to Soweto.

According to the team’s head coach, Thembelani Mhlongo, discipline is what set his boys apart from the rest.

“I think I was fortunate to work with a group of very disciplined boys.

Lakeview full Service Primary went through the competition without suffering a single defeat and we crowned Gauteng Champions.

“They attend all our training sessions, they listen very well too, and so it’s easier to implement any tactical changes. And also their desire, especially in the final match because we had to come from behind.

“The boys had to pull together. We’re proud to represent our great school and we look forward to going back and defending our trophy,” said Mhlongo.

The team’s Captain, Bandile Qithi, said it was important for young people to participate in school sports.

“I am very happy to be part of the team. I think it’s good for the youth to have the chance to play sports and explore our talents. The matches were very tough but we played well and I am happy we came back with the trophy,” the 12-year-old said.

The players and coach were not the only ones involved however, the key to Lakeview’s success lies in a combined effort from the entire school. This was according to the school’s Sporting Coordinator, Mbuyiselo Makalima.

“It was a team effort, by that I’m not just referring to the team, but the whole school. Everyone is very supportive and helps wherever possible. Even our Principal, he is very hands-on, when we go to these games he is there with us and we appreciate for that effort,” said Makalima.

Coach Mhlongo concluded by calling on parents to support their kids’ athletic talents.

“The trophy shows that there is talent. And you never know where your child’s talent may lie; some of these boys could forge careers out of soccer, so we call on parents to support wherever and whenever they can.”
