Man mistaken for a thief beaten to death in Diepkloof

The family believes that the police are dragging their feet when it comes to the case and alleged that they do not want to arrest because it is well-known where the incident happened and the suspects are not denying it.

The family of the late Teboho Tsotetsi wants justice after their son was brutally murdered in Diepkloof zone 4 last month on September 22.

His aunt Matshidiso Tsotetsi said they used to call him Shanyana. She said like any other young person he loved drinking alcohol and spending time with his friends. She described him as a jolly person.

“He was never a problematic child or a criminal, he used to go out at night drink but we have never heard that he was engaged in criminal activities,” said Matshidiso.

She said hearing that their son was in hospital raised alarms because you can easily spot a thief by stealing things at home and added that Shanyane has never in his life stole anything.

Matshidiso described his niece as a happy person who was well behaved. She said judging from his character it didn’t make sense that he attempted to break in. she said the most worrying part about the case is that the police are not giving them straight answers.

Shanyana’s aunt said his brother tried to go to the family to let them know that the boy is no more but the family was very rude to him.

“Like they were not welcoming or apologetic, they were not sorry about the whole thing it was just a thing of we hit him so what,” alleged Matshidiso.

The family believes that the police are dragging their feet’s when it comes to the case and alleged that they do not want to arrest because it is well-known where the incident happened and the suspects are not denying it.
His aunt said all they want is justice for their child and said they are willing to escalate the matter if they don’t get help in Diepkloof Police.

“Because we know who did it, they are not denying it but they are hiding behind a mob,” continued the aunt.
She said on the deceased they only found a key, he didn’t have a phone, he was barefooted which is the thing we were asking them that if he was stealing what did you find in his possession. He had nothing that proved that he was trying to steal because he wasn’t armed.

His friend Zanele Maseko said they are requesting the Police to work with them in the #justiceforshakes movement. She said on the day her friend died they were together but never knew it was her last time with him.

She recalled that shakes, as they used to call him, loved dancing and having fun. Maseko said they are willing to do everything to get justice for their friend.

According to the communications officer of Diepkloof Police Station Captain Phephi Matlou-Mteto confirmed that a case of murder was opened and said at this stage they have not made any arrest but the detective responsible for the case is still busy with the investigation.
