Loving loved ones with Dementia

"Dementia occurs whenever a number of proteins that attack and kill brain cells are found in the brain. However, dementia is different for everyone and Alzheimers is a type of dementia." - Doctor Aqeela Muhammad.

Doctor Aqeela Muhammad went to the Dementia awareness campaign and explained that Alzheimers and Dementia are her specialty and that dementia is not part of normal aging, she said, “Dementia occurs whenever a number of proteins which attack and kills brain cells are found in the brain. However, dementia are different for everyone and Alzheimers is a type of a dementia.”

Various key points on how to spot dementia in the early stages were brought to light at the awareness campaign and Makwatse Ramokgopa who steered the campaign also spoke about how the diseases like Alzheimer and dementia are like having to lose a loved one while they are still alive.

Ramokgopa spoke about the journey that brought her to the campaign and how her pain has become her purpose, she spoke about having to take care of her mother who suffers from dementia and how the entire experience has taught her love in abundance and sincere forgiveness, she said, “Having to look after my mother with dementia has taught me big life lessons worth carrying forever.”

Many important symptoms of dementia were discussed at the hall in Diepkloof where the people even got to ask their burning questions from the doctor who was present to give insight.

Ramokgopa said, “People must be knowledgeable of dementia because people who suffer from the disease can be aggressive, forgetful and stubborn, yet we should not blame them, but understand them because its a condition.”

The people were taught in depth about the three major stages of dementia and how to spot the progressive disease during its beginning stages.
