Event organiser and fashion designer, Varity Oliphant said that the initiative stems from wanting to change the narrative of Klipspruit West Secondary.

Klipspruit West Secondary School hosted a skills transfer convention and career day  Themed ‘It’s possible’, the campaign was designed in hopes to inspire the learners at the school, so that they too, could inspire youngsters in the Klipspruit West community.

Event organiser and fashion designer, Varity Oliphant said that the initiative stems from wanting to change the narrative of Klipspruit West Secondary.

“In the beginning of the year, this school received quite alot of negative media coverage because it had the lowest matric pass rate in Gauteng but I am here to prove to these learners and the community at large that it is possible to do better and be better. I want to show them that their dreams and aspirations are possible,” said Oliphant.

Starting at 8am, the skills convention housed professionals from various industries who were present at the school to motivate learners.

“We housed a variety of careers including tourism, fashion, sales, beauty, engineering, photography, marketing, plumbing as well as journalism. The learners underwent a seven week skills development programme so the career day was a way of showing what they have learned within this time,” said Oliphant.

“I am proud of each and every learner who participated. They remained committed,” she added.

Chileen Ferreira, who is the founder of Chileen’s hair salon was present at the event. “I worked with a few girls over the past few weeks and I am proud of everything they have done so far. The beauty industry is not easy but they remained excited and motivated throughout the programme,” said Ferreira.

“Each of the girls who worked with me received nail kits and a state of the art nail dryer so assist them in their own business ventures,” she added. Pastor Ashley Sauls was also present to motivate the youth.

The skills convention concluded with a fashion show by Designer Varity Oliphant. Learners from the school who participated in the modelling and fashion programme wore clothes created by the local designer. Local musicians kept learners entertained throughout the day.
