First batch of new EMS vehicles delivered to City of Joburg

On September 23, Executive Mayor Cllr Herman Mashaba was at the Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s (JMPD) Headquarters in Martindale where the City of Johannesburg (COJ) received their first batch of new EMS vehicles.

There have been a few stories that we covered over the years where there were fires involved and residents had to make a way to put out the fires due to the lack of vehicles from Emergency Management Services (EMS). This article may restore some faith in residents when it comes to the availability of EMS vehicles.

On September 23, Executive Mayor Cllr Herman Mashaba was at the Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s (JMPD) Headquarters in Martindale where the City of Johannesburg (COJ) received their first batch of new EMS vehicles.

This was part of the City’s critical fleet renewal programme. According to the press release by Mayor Mashaba, the renewal of the City’s EMS fleet, which includes fire and rescue vehicles, is a long-awaited and much-needed service delivery initiatives which will directly impact on the lives of residents.

In the coming months, the City expects to add over 90 EMS vehicles to the existing fleet. Mashaba was joined by the MMC for Public Safety, Cllr Michael Sun, and the acting MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services (GCSS), Cllr Leah Knott, as the City took delivery of these 10 rapid intervention vehicles, with five more due by the end of the week.

“These vehicles are a critical resource within EMS since firefighters can use them for first response. Rapid intervention vehicles often arrive first on the scene where firefighters can assess the situation and call for the appropriate firefighting resources.

“These vehicles also carry rescue equipment that EMS utilises in responding to motor vehicle accidents,” explained the Mayor.

In June, EMS also received 42 brand new ambulances which replaced the broken down and ageing fleet. This brought the EMS fleet to hundred and one ambulances servicing Joburg residents. According to the release, all 30 stations each received at least one new ambulance.

“The City expects to take delivery of batches of emergency vehicles, including pumper fire engines, at the end of each month. I would like to thank the members of our coalition government, the IFP, ACDP, COPE, UDM, and Freedom Front Plus for their continued support in bringing change to the residents of our City,” concluded Mashaba.
