With Matric Dance season fast approaching, Sean White, a local DJ and his team are eager to assist matriculants who cannot afford to buy dresses and suits for their big night.

Although, The Banquet Makeover is still in its inception stage the team aims to dress a total of Eight matriculants this year. Born in Eldorado Park, White, who now lives in Ennerdale said that the initiative stems from wanting to keep the youth, especially matriculants, motivated.

According to White, learners should not be deprived of attending their final year dance because they cannot afford an outfit for a special occasion.

“Many families are unable to send their children to their Matric farewell because they simply cannot afford it. I come from a community where unemployment is the reality for many so this project has been set in place to give hope to those in need.

“As we dress these learners for their special night, we want to transform them on the inside as well as the outside, by letting them know they are loved, special and important. They deserve to look and feel beautiful on their special night despite their circumstances, background or lack of finances,” said White.

The Banquet Makeover team which currently consists of five members namely, Sean White, Boran Sirodico, Tarryn Elliot, Lauren Cruz and Leigh-Ann Lomberg started their project by reaching out to matriculants on Facebook.

While the project is aimed at helping disadvantaged learners attend their Matric dance in grand style by providing them with dresses, suits, make-up, shoes and transport, the organisers also use the platform to promote awareness on the dangers of substance abuse and teenage pregnancies.

“Too many of our youngsters are distracted, we want to work towards motivating them and encourage them to stay focused on their goals. A part of our initiative is to find bursaries to help fund these matriculants so that they can study further,” said White.

Thank you to Ella Beats by Luan Alexis and Beauti Couture who are on board with us so far,” White concluded.
