Sonnyboy Nene breaking free from his drug addiction

Breaking free from addiction is possible.

Getting tangled up in a life of drug addiction looks very traumatising and permanent and it is rare one comes across an individual who has been able to break free from the diminishing lifestyle.

Bheki Myende of Bheki Myende Foundation has been through thick and thin with the local youth that finds itself in a trap of drug addiction and even though some young individuals get the opportunity through him to get to rehab for cleaning and relapse after a while, some people are still diligently holding onto to their clean lifestyles like Sonnyboy Nene.

Nene started smoking from back in 2003 and according to him, that lifestyle led him to Hillbrow where he depended solely on crime to feed himself and his drug addiction.

Nene reflected on the chaotic life he used to live while in town and he mentioned that he had to leave his community because of the many crimes he had committed.

Nene said, “My family missed me and my mother always tried to go look for me in town to no avail.”
One incident occurred in town that saw Nene needing to return to the hood where he met Myende who then helped him get to rehab.

Nene said, “While trying to start a life of addiction again in Bareng, I bumped into Bheki Myende praying and encouraging other people to go to rehab, I heard about how he helped many friends get clean so I thought this was my opportunity to clean up as well.”

Nene narrated the challenges that he encountered on his way to rehab and during his stay in the rehab, but since he was serious about turning around his life, Nene said, “I decided to honestly see my rehabilitation till the end.”

Nene spoke about how he was shot twice in the leg while living in the streets and prioritising on feeding his addiction instead of getting medical help, so as a result, he had to live with one bullet inside of him for a while.

Myende said, “It is possible to turn around your life as an addict, the decision begins with you.”
Nene has been clean for almost a year now and is still really determined to maintain his sobriety.
