Mpete Mosaka Branch supports the fight against Gender Based-Violence

According to police statistics, for every person murdered in South Africa, two are raped, with over 40 000 rapes being reported annually.

Following Murders of several women in South Africa and reports of Gender-Based Violence over recent weeks, there has been outrage, street protests and marches.

This past Sunday African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) Mpete Mosaka Branch had a march against Gender-Based Violence starting at the Pimville Square then proceeded to the Pimville Community Centre (PCC) for a candle lighting ceremony to pay tribute to all the victims of gender-based violence.

Lead by the Ward 22 Councilor Elizabeth Mabaso the march saw some residents approaching them to report other related issues. One of the residents alleged that his sister was stabbed 15 times by her partner, this triggered emotions of those who were at the march and they reacted immediately.

Mabaso condemned Gender Based-Violence and urged for mutual respect practice from both genders. “Our country is becoming increasingly dangerous for women and we cannot just sit and watch, we are against it and we are going to fight against it. We cannot normalize Gender-Based Violence, men need to know that we are not just objects or slaves,” Mabaso said.

Among these women were men who were also saying that they are against gender-based violence
and are willing to support women in this battle.

According to research, sexual offences, which showed a decline over the past decade, are increasing. According to police statistics, for every person murdered in South Africa, two are raped, with over 40 000 rapes being reported annually. The real number is quite possibly substantially higher, as we know that many rapes go unreported.
