#WeRead Create a story book and get children reading

It is vital to introduce children to reading before they turn five in order for them to get to read for meaning which is an essential part of literacy.

South Africa observed National Book Week last week however creating a culture of reading does not happen in a week. Hollard’s InstaStory Book initiative is aiming to create a culture of reading by making children’s storybooks more accessible to people in communities.

The InstaStory Book initiative allows people to create books by writing, conceptualising, illustrating and laying out the books and then sending the completed storybook to Hollard’s Instagram page where the storybook will be uploaded onto the InstaStory webpage. The story can be downloaded and printed from the webpage which means more books will be available to children.

In a country where four out of five grade four children cannot read with comprehension according to a study published last year by the University of Pretoria building a culture of reading to prevent a similar situation from happening in the future becomes of utmost importance.
