Hockey and Netball tournament in Eldorado Park Extension One

Getting girls active.

A Women’s Day Hockey and Netball tournament were held in Eldorado Park Extension One on August 24. With 120 girls participating in the tournament, community leader Finley Watson said that the tournament aimed to inspire young girls, get them to be goal-driven and keep them away from wrongdoing.

“There is still this misconception that sport is supposed to be for men or that men are better at it. I want to show these girls from the community that they too are capable of playing any sport they wish,” said Watson.

Watson also said that there are many social ills currently plaguing the community.

“Substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, unemployment, child neglect and youngsters dropping out of school are still a reality we are faced with, so this is why sport is so important. It is an opportunity to keep our children motivated, busy, active and off the street. Sports is used to create a culture of discipline and sportsmanship,” said Watson.
Watson’s goal is to start Netball and Hockey Leagues in Eldorado Park.

“We aim to take this to every extension in Eldos,” he said. Watson also confirmed that girls from Eldorado Park participated in a sports tournament held at the University of Johannesburg on August 9.

“The U17s lost in the finals this year and, last year, our U14s won. Our girls have so much potential,” he added.
It’s been two months since Watson changed the name of his sports club.

“It used to be Juventus Sports Club but due to complications I had to change it to the Finely Watson Sports Academy,” said Watson.

With training taking place every Tuesday to Thursday, Watson uses the grounds between the flats to train the youngsters.

“There is still a lot that needs to be done and most of the expenses come directly from my pocket. I appeal to the community to assist in maintaining and fixing our field. We need equipment to ensure the success of our sports programmes,” he concluded.
