St Barnabas College becomes a School of Specialisation

Honeywell and Melisizwe Computer Lab Project are partners of the Department of Education and they will ensure that 197 Grade 8 learners from both schools are equipped with software programming and other ICT skills.

St Barnabas College and UJ Metropolitan Academy was officially announced as one of the Mathematics, Science and ICT School of Specialisation in Gauteng on August 30.

The Gauteng MEC for Education and Youth Development, Mr Panyaza Lesufi could unfortunately not make it to launch at St Barnabas and was represented by the Head of Department Edward Mosuwe.

The morning was filled with many events as there were guest speakers, and performances from learners of the two schools.

Parents and guests from other Schools of Specialisation also attended the event. Sean Smith, from Honeywell spoke about the importance of Mathematics, Sciences Technology and how it is important to do such subjects which will equip you to live in the 4th Industrial Revolution.

“We are trying to make education in Gauteng fun, and to take advantage of this fun education, all we ask of you is to take heed of the opportunities that are being presented to you. We are here to make sure that there is no miss match so that when our young people exit school, they can have the types of skills for the future. Gone are the days when all of our children come out of school all doing the same subjects.

“We have taken a conscious decision that every child will have a variety of skills, and these skills will also be certified,” said Mosuwe.

Honeywell and Melisizwe Computer Lab Project are partners of the Department of Education and they will ensure that 197 Grade 8 learners from both schools are equipped with software programming and other ICT skills.

This will ensure that computer literacy is a foundation for high school education. It was mentioned that the partnership with Honeywell previously exposed some educators and learners from other schools to the Aviation world in America. St Barnabas College and UJ Metropolitan Academy are Mathematics, Science and ICT schools of specialization, with a series of courses in basic IT literacy, computer programming and robotics.

Mosuwe congratulated Principal Heather Carolus of St Barnabas College and Principal Reyhana Jardine from UJ Metropolitan Academy for running the schools the way they do as the process to becoming a School of Specialisation is a tough one to get through.

This initiative by the Gauteng Department of Education to drive participation among learners in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and ICT subjects, giving them skills needed to target the wide range of technology careers being created by the 4th Industrial Revolution.
