Qhobosheane creates young ‘re-claimers’

The school's principal, Nkwe Monageng expressed his deepest gratitude and said that he will continue encouraging his learners to collect more waste.

People usually recycle in an attempt to make a daily living, the waste reclaimers, but Qhobosheane Primary School in Diepkoof Zone 1 has partnered with Coca Cola to use recycling as a catalyst to keep their environment clean, at the same time saving our planet, creating a community of young reclaimers.

Learners at this school are used to the culture of bringing recyclable waste material, to a point where they spend half of their time searching for anything recyclable to take to school.

You can imagine the competition that this initiative came with, everyone wanted to bring the more waste materials than others and become a regular recycler, and even better, there were sometimes prizes for those who are showing determination, this indeed served as a motivation.

Coca Cola hosted a fun day at the school on Saturday, August 17, where different sporting episodes took place and everyone in the community was invited, but to enter, they had to bring a bag of recyclable waste materials. Parents also showed support and were present at this fun and educational event.

According to Homolemo Malefane, Coca Cola’s School Recycling Representative, out of all the schools she has been engaging with regarding recycling, Qhobosheane was the one that showed a lot of determination.

“Basically, what we do is we encourage different schools to collect waste so that they can increase their fundraising money, if they reach a certain target there is a prize. We introduced the initiative at many schools but Qhobosheane was the most active, the teachers were more involved and the principal was very welcoming and even the learners were showing a lot of determination,” Malefane said.

“Because of their dedication, we have decided to host a fun day for them at their school, where they compete with other schools, so that all the other schools can see how much fun recycling can be. We invited different schools from Soweto to come and compete in different sporting activities as well, the winning school received a prize,” she added.

The school’s principal, Nkwe Monageng expressed his deepest gratitude and said that he will continue encouraging his learners to collect more waste.

“This initiative will not only educate learners about keeping the environment clean but it will also teach them the importance of saving our planet in a form of recycling, reusing material is the way to go. “I would like to thank the CPF team from the Diepkloof Police Station, my teachers who are coordinating this programme and Coca Cola. This will really help us create awareness around the issue of recycling,” Monageng said.

“I am also grateful of the idea of bringing sports into the programme as sports seems to be dying in our schools,” Monageng added.

Qhobosheane Primary School remains winners both in recycling as well as sports, as the football and netball teams won and are going to represent their region.
