Leading up to the Joburg SPAR Women’s Challenge Race competition for the Face of SPAR race was ran and the top 5 finalists were selected including Soweto’s very own Chwaiyita Gugwini.

Sarah Ayres was announced Face of the Race 2019/2020 Winner at this year’s Spar Face of the Race announcement on Thursday, August 22.

” This is unbelievable, out of all the ladies I was always the tallest the whitest and I would always stick out so now that I’ was crowned the Spar Face of the Race 2019 I’m gonna stick out for everyone,” she said

Although Gugwini was not crowned the Spar Face of the Race 2019, she said that she is grateful and proud to have been part of the competition.

“Although I did not win I am still proud of myself, I still feel like a winner. I entered the competition because I wanted to show women that you can challenge yourself, you can start over, I wanted to be an inspiration because I have asthma and technically I cannot run, but I started small, and took everything slowly until I got to where I am,” Gugwini said.

Speaking at the event, Face of the Spar Race 2018 Thulethu Ngqokwe said that it has been an amazing journey for her.

“It’s not about beauty, It’s about what you can do for the community. I would like to thank Spar, the experience has been awesome. A part of me has grown so much, I have been approached by agencies asking me to work with them,”  said Ngqokwe.
