Eldorado Schools celebrate 25 years of Joburg Orchestra Festival

Around 200 learners across Eldorado came for the Joburg Orchestra Festival.

The 25th Annual Joburg Orchestra extravaganza once again returned to Eldorado Park on the 25th time on Thursday. The event was hosted at the Don Mateman Hall in Eldorado and brought out parents, teachers and music lovers from around the city. The event is jointly organized by the Pro Artes Populli Arts and Culture Organization. It was previously hosted in Johannesburg until the collaboration reached an agreement that the event be hosted in Eldorado. This was according to the Chairperson of Pro Artes Populli Arts and Culture Organization, Lydia Mofokeng.

“Our Committee used to organize for the children to go to Johannesburg so children. Thankfully an agreement was reached we the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra for them to come this side,” she said.

Mofokeng also added that since the Orchestra started coming to Eldorado, parents and children grow fonder of music and have shown interest in learning more about the musical instruments and the various careers available in Arts and Culture.

Around 200 learners from schools around Eldorado Park showed up for the music festival. The day of kicked off with an Instrument Workshop in the morning, where learners got a rare chance to learn practically about the various music instruments from the experienced team of the Johannesburg Symphony Ochestra. 12 year old Grade 7 learners Khanyi Tshangela and Lezae Beukes told Soweto Urban News spoke to Soweto Urban on their experience.

Beukes said it was her fourth year coming to the show.

“It’s great! That’s why I keep coming back. I really enjoy singing and this festival allows to me to express that” she said.

While Tshangela said it was important a festival like this to come to Eldorado because it gives the locals and chance to be artistic

“I think it’s so important that we get to have something like this. It gives the People of Eldo that opportunity to learn about new instruments and singing, things we don’t get to do every day,” said Tshangela

The festival saw performances from various artists including The Richard Cock led Johannesburg Orchestra.Parents and teachers were also treated to a special performance from the Eldorado Schools Mass Choir which featured learners from different schools across Eldorado.

In addition to music and artistic creativity. The festival allowed learners from different schools to interact and lifetime friendships were forged. This was according to 11-year-old Jordan Klassen.

“It’s always great coming here. You get to meet new people, make friends and sisters. To someone who’s never been here I would say they should really check it out,” she said.

Mofokeng emphasized the 11-year old’s point.

“We are saying parents should really consider letting their encouraging their children to come. Children are so individualistic; never know where your child’s talent lies. We witness kids who can really sing here other who are very good with musical and instruments and we realize that they are talented and try to refer them to schools of Art around Johannesburg so it’s something really worth a try,” Mofokeng said.
