FOCUS: Mrs Africa Classic Finalist shares her story

Michaels has been part of the painting at the Sophiatown police station for Mandela Day, she did a blanket drive, and had drives where she gave children clothing.

Tilly Michaels, the chairperson of the Sophiatown Community Policing Forum (CPF) and a finalist in the Mrs Africa Classic division shares her journey in the competition with us.

Michaels explains: “It is a continental pageant which has four categories in it, the Mrs Africa Classic is in the age group of 45 to 60 years old. It is an eight-month-long journey, it is an African beauty queen with substance so the competition is not just about beauty, it is about beauty with a purpose and part of the requirements of the competition is to do charity work and it can be anything.”

Michaels has been part of the painting at the Sophiatown police station for Mandela Day, she did a blanket drive, and had drives where she gave children clothing.

“I am having a High Tea at Newclare Primary on August 24 at 2 pm, in my journey in the CPF, one of the things that I have really come to realise is the trouble that our young girls are in, there are so many who drop out of school due to pregnancy, substance abuse, or their affiliation with gangs or having partners who are in gangs, our aspirational levels need work on.

“We are raising funds with the high tea so that we can take three women to experience continental pageantry. There are opportunities for girls to do so many things,” added Michaels.

When asked, why she entered the competition, Michaels explained: “We going into re-elections for the CPF and sector crime forums and it has been such a stressful journey, I’ve been the chairperson for the CPF for five years, I was looking for something else to do instead of looking for re-election into the CPF.

“I just did not know how much work it is to stay into this competition but I managed to combine the two. I did not realise the weight that this competition carries, I’ve been getting calls to be part of so many events and I’m just a finalist now imagine if I have to win, you can make so much of a difference.”

Michaels has pageant week between October 24 to November 2, and during this week will have to show her portfolio of what she did for each month, and this forms part of the selection criteria.

The finalist would like to have skills development in the community where senior ladies with the skills of sewing and so forth, to teach young girls so that they can start a business, creating employment in the community and have the money circulating just in the community.
