Modern Sports Development hosted eight clubs to compete in the Doubles Chess Open tournament at Esihlahleni Sports Grounds, Zola 3.

The eight clubs included Forza, Future Stars, Nokeri Chess Club, Jabulani, Knight Raiders, Emdeni Rebel Pawns Chess Club, Bishop Raiders and Lions chess club.

Hlenga Maguma and Karabo Mulovhedzi have been crowned champions of the tournament; the pair took home gold medals while Luyanda Ntsume and Siyabonga Mazibuko from the Bishops chess club secured the 2nd place. Neo Moahlodi and Siphosethu Mbewu from the Knight Raiders took home bronze medal for finishing in 3rd place.

Tournament organiser Sbonelo Manana said there are a lot of people in the community who can play chess but there are no opportunities to show their skills.

“I’ve taken the initiative to start hosting tournaments but because they play for a short period that is why in September we will be starting a chess league series which I plan to take three months,” he continued.

“And in every three months I will be introducing various rules which make the tournament more exciting as this tournament was to all the lads who participated in this tournament and thanks to National Lotteries Commission South Africa for helping with this,” said Manana.

Manana emphasised the importance of the youngsters participating in sport stating that chess increases their thinking capacity as most of the participants also participate in other physical sports and they also get to exercise their minds by playing chess.
