Hope for the unemployed youth in Klipspruit West

The Klipspruit West Interaction Centre (KWIC) opened its doors to the people of the Greater Eldorado Park community.

Unemployed residents in Klipspruit West can rest assured that the scourge of unemployment is being tackled and with hard work and commitment it will eventually be a thing of the past.

In recent months, the Klipspruit West Interaction Centre (KWIC) opened its doors to the people of the Greater Eldorado Park community with the aim of assisting residents, especially youth, with finding job opportunities as well as skill development programmes.

Founders of KWIC, Riaan Niewenhuys, Richard De Jongh, Mervin Rhoda, Clayton April and Simone Marais are committed to bringing about positive, long lasting change within the community.

“The idea arose during election time. We realised how many of our residents were unemployed, so we took it upon ourselves to try and assist,” said Niewenhuys.

“Having identified the need in our community, our centre is a place where residents can find information on how to up skill themselves. Our role is to source skills development programmes as well as employment opportunities and match it with residents who have registered with us and is on our database. We have also had discussions with the City of Johannesburg. They have the same ideas in mind as our centre so we are aligning ourselves to partner with them,” he added.

“It’s as easy as simply walking into our office and asking for assistance. We also assist with creating CV’s that are market related and we prepare residents for interviews should they be called in for one, all of this is free of charge,” said Rhoda.

When asked what the short term and long term goals for the centre are De Jongh said that for the focus is on expanding the centre. “We aim to make KWIC a one-stop-shop for everything. Not only will we focus on unemployment but we are looking at the social side of things as well,” he said.

The Klipspruit West Interaction Centre makes use of their own resources. “We make due with what we have, however, we need the entire community involved to help us make this a success. We plan to host fundraisers in the future so we can sustain the centre,” April concluded.
