Parkdale Primary School, in Eldorado Park participated in this year’s South African Schools Winter Games Championship

A great victory for team Gauteng.

Durban was the host city for this year’s South African Schools Winter Games Championship which took place the first week of July.

The city was abuzz with teams across the country competing for the top spot and three learners from Parkdale Primary School, in Eldorado Park were selected to participate. The three learners were selected to represent Gauteng in the U/14 hockey division.

The games, hosted in different venues in Durban featured various sporting codes including Football U/15, U/1, Mildly intellectually disabled and deaf; Netball U/15 and intellectually impaired, volleyball U/15 and U/17; hockey U/14, tennis U/15 and 18 as well as rugby U/15.

After the week-long tournament, the Gauteng Team took first place, with the Western Cape coming in second and the host province KwaZulu-Natal taking third place.

Angela Twala, who is the hockey coach at Parkdale Primary School worked closely with the three learners, Tehillah Samsodien, Ashton Stanley and Tyrelle Johnson.

“They did exceptionally well and I am so proud of them. They put in the work, they were committed and remained focused and it all paid off. Their confidence on the field was something I will never forget. It feels great to be a part of the winning Gauteng team,” said Twala.

The Gauteng team consisted of 425 players, who were divided across all sporting codes. Ria Swart, the Chef de Mission of Team Gauteng said that the competition was extremely tight and that she wants to thank every learner, educator and support staff from both the Department of Education and Sports, Arts and Culture for their contribution to this victory.

Team Gauteng has won the National Winter Games for six consecutive years.
