Ebuhleni Primary School teachers and parents join forces to improve results

The school encourages parents' participation in their children's education as it makes the learning process a bit easier for the leaners.

Ebuhleni Primary School teachers want to make use of the last few months left on the school calendar to help children improve their performance. Parents and teachers have dedicated three hours for one on one sessions.

Parents and teachers had a busy day at the school in Emdeni. The school encourages parents’ participation in their children’s education as it makes the learning process a bit easier for the leaners. As for the teachers, they shared ideas on how parents can best get involved and help their children when they are struggling academically.

Deputy principal Khanyisile Makhathini stated that parental involvement is critical in children’s education as it boosts their self-esteem and academic performance. It also develops and improves skills, behaviour and attitude to be precise. Teachers get to share ideas as to how best parents can assist, enhance and support the education of their children.

Grade One teacher Nonkuleleko Selenyane said the great thing is that they can have one on one sessions with parents anytime they see the need to. Selenyane said she even suggested that they initiate a WhatsApp group for parents.

“Because every child is different; I observe and write down all the challenges the child may have and I later discuss it with the parents to find the best way to support that learner,” Selenyane continued.

“It is important because Grade One is a foundation phase and I have to ensure; that a child can understand sounds because that is how they learn to read and because we have a lot of work, it is important for parents to also help us, learning should continue even at home,” said Selenyane.

Solomon Kunene, one of the parents, said the idea is great because it connects all the three people involved; the leaner, parent and the teacher and it means that the learners will be able to stay focused because I don’t have to wait for the child to tell us about their homework.

“Now, it means I also have a task to ensure that we go through Xolani’s homework every day because I use to do it when he would ask, now I have to make sure that he reads more so that he can be able to read and understand on his own,” said Kunene.
