Children at the Sunshine Centre in Eldorado Park Extension Six treated to a day filled with fun

A treat for kids at the Sunshine Centre.

Children at the Sunshine Centre in Eldorado Park Extension Six were treated to a day filled with fun. Tourvest, who is Southern Africa’s leading integrated tourism group, was the official sponsor on the day.

Tourvest CEO, Allison Graham, said most of her staff volunteered at Nkosi’s Haven, a centre offering holistic care and support for destitute HIV/AIDS infected mothers, her children, and resulting AIDS orphans.

“We chose the Sunshine because we wanted to do things a little differently this year. So the idea was to have a balanced approach working with both abled-bodied residents as well the disabled,” said Graham.

Nirvashnee Reddy, Tourvest’s Chief Financial Officer said that the Sunshine Centre is special to the staff at Tourvest.

“We wanted to do something really special for the children at the centre. We thought that instead of painting buildings we should directly impact their lives by making Mandela Day special and memorable for them.

“Many of these children come from poor backgrounds, so we wanted to throw them a massive party with rides and lots of yummy food for them to enjoy,” said Reddy.

The Sunshine Centre is a registered Non-Profit Organisation that caters for children with disabilities from the Greater Soweto and Eldorado Park. Daily programmes are held from 8 am to 1:30 pm every Monday to Friday. There are currently four teachers on the premises who are trained in ECD levels 4 and 5.

“A total of eight volunteers from the community are on daily to assist the teachers,” she added.
After 43 years the Sunshine Centre is still committed to growing the capacity of emerging projects for children with disabilities and delays.
